Ly Son Island in Quang Ngai Province, also called Cu Lao Re, is covered an area of 10 square kilometers, divided into 3 communes of An Vinh, An Binh and An Hai. Thanks to many historical, cultural relics and fascinating tourist areas, Ly Son Island held a strategic position on the East sea of Vietnam.
It contains the potential for tourism and the valuable materials on Hoang Sa. Otherwise, this island is famous for its vast garlic fields. It is well-known as the island of garlic’s kingdom.

According to scientists, Ly Son Island was formed by the movement of volcanic lava erupting several million years ago. Remnant of the volcanoes are fertility red basalt soil, which create good conditions for the diversity and lush of cover vegetation. Ly Son consist of five wild and gigantic beauty rock mountains such as Thoi Loi, Gieng Tien, Hon Vung, Hon Soi and Hon Tai. All of them is the island’s pride.

Looking down from the peak of the mountains, tourists can admire the spectacular colorful scene with one side is immense field of green grass in the pan-shaped valley and other side is a whole of colors from the blue ocean, white sand and red basalt soil to the green garlic fields.

Ly Son Island is destination of the natural task team that protected the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa Island under the Nguyen Dynasty. Nowadays, this island is called a living museum for Hoang Sa’s artifacts. The island display more than 1,000 documents, photos and artifacts associated with the heroic Hoang Sa and Truong Sa troops. Ly Son island is also place where host ceremony to the souls of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa soldiers’ who  sacrificed their lives in missions on the East Sea, in the third lunar month every year. Am Linh temple worships the ancestor who explored and reclaimed the land 400 years ago. Am Linh Tu pagoda and Gio Tom site are monuments to remember the soldiers who laid down their lives for the country’s sovereignty of the area. Almost relic is untouched without the superficial repair that many others in the country suffer nowadays.

Visiting this island, tourists should not ignore historical and cultural relics such as Hang Pagoda, Duc Pagoda, Cau cave, Chua Ngoc Lady Roi palace. Hang Pagoda is a combination of natural feature and human labour. Endowed with magnificent and poetic scenery, Hang Pagoda is naturally chosen by tourists as an ideal destination for relaxation. Coming to Ly Son Island, tourists should not ignore beautiful beaches with clear blue water and you can play with the waves.

Garlic and onion are the two local specialties of the Island. The people on the island mainly make a living from growing onions and garlic or fishing. If you are interested in fishing works, you will see the locals at Ly Son port sewing nets. The fishermen go to the sea at 3.am and come back to the island at 7:30 am with full of fishes on their nets. There are many traditional festivals such as boat racing from the 4th to the 8th of lunar new year and the biggest ceremony in memory of the soldiers and fisherman died in the sea which is held on 16th March of the lunar Calendar. This event attracts many Vietnamese tourists.

Especially, Ly Son has its own special food dishes, notably garlic salad, baby squid soup with crisp baked rice paper and oddly shape snail of varied flavor. Other specialty in Ly Son Island is the local seaweed. It is grown surrounding the island.  Bim Bim seaweed salad made of seaweed, mixed vegetables with sweet and sour sauce was the most tasteful dish on this island. In summer days, watching the sunset and enjoying a bowl of seaweed sweet gruel is so great. Ly Son Island is an amazing and noticeable tourist destination in Quang Ngai. Coming to this island, tourists will admire magnificent of landscape, high mountains and ancient pagodas which moves people’s heart coming here.
