Tam Coc – Bich Dong is also known by another name as “Halong bay on land” or “Vietnam” (after Huong Tich grotto at Perfume pagoda ) which is set up to focus on developing national tourism sites of Vietnam. Locate at Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh province, the whole area is including the limestone cave systems and historic relics related to Tran dynasty.
The Tam Coc – Bich Dong has an area of 350.3 hectares, far from National Route 1A about 2km , from Ninh Binh city 7km. Visiting here, visitor can join in various types of tour as by boat, cycling or walking which connected nearly 20 destination of this area.
First, about its name, Tam Coc has a meaning of three grottos (“Tam” means ba, “Coc” means cave) , including Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba cave. These three caves are created by Ngo Dong River through the limestone system. Among three caves, Hang Ca is round 127m long with a cave mouth of 20m wide. This is a most beautiful cave because of many majestic natural arts deep inside. Besides, far from Hang Ca nearly 1km, Hang Hai is about 60 long. On its ceiling, visitor can see a diversity of sparking stalactites. Meanwhile, just nearby, Hang Ba is about 50m long and its ceiling is lower than the above two. It looks like a plutonic cupola.
To reach Tam Coc, visitor will start at center wharf by boat. Along the Ngo Dong river, through many limestone mountain, rice fields… traveler will have time to enjoy the cool air, fresh, beautiful sky with clouds. .Especially, the image of rice fields makes a lot of attractive sense with bleu or yellow color, added to it, the water is so green. This is really a remarkable feature of this place.
Furthermore, for adventurer, visitor can continue explore Fairy stream or join in climbing activity to reach Noi Lam temple. It can be said that Tam Coc looks like a panorama view that we can see the combination of nature, mountain, grotto, temple…so interesting!
Not only have that, from Tam Coc, visitor can continue their trip to go to Bich Dong which is situated at the grandiose Ngu Nhac Mountain. Bich Dong is the name of beautiful pagoda that means “Green Grotto” or “Pearl Grotto”. This pagoda was built from Post Le dynasty which divided into three structures: Ha, Trung, and Thuong Pagodas. From the top of Thuong Pagodas, visitor has an opportunity to admire a spectacular view of this terrain.
Besides of Tam Coc- Bich Dong, there is one more attractive destination that visitor can not miss, is Sun Valley ( Thung Nang ) which is known as a beautiful ecological tourism. Reaching to Thung Nang, visitor must go by boat about 3km. Ecological environment is still keep a wild feature with a rich fauna and flora system, has not been explored. Tourist has a time to relax and feel comfortable in refresh air. On the contrary, while Tam Coc –Bich Dong is more and more popular, but Thung Nham is a strange name for tourist to Ninh Binh. However, coming Thung Nham, visitor will not disappoint because of its poetic beauty. Thung Nham is called by another name – bird valley because a lot of birds choose this valley for its place. Go there, visitors have a chance to enjoy the special dishes of local people or see a lot of farms, orchards, fish ponds… It is real experience.
Beside these places, there are some other sites that are so attractive here such as Ancient Vietnamese village – Co Vien Lau, Ben Dang River – the Galaxy, Hang Buddha… On the whole, with historic and natural value, Tam Coc – Bich Dong is now a huge potential tourism of Ninh Binh province.
